Obituary for Mariamma Mathai

Mariamma Mathai
Mariamma Mathai was born on September 25, 1940 in the village of Thalavady in the Alleppy district of Kerala, India. She was the daughter of the late Mathunny Thomas and Mariamma John Thomas. She belonged to a large loving family and was the fourth of 8 siblings. She grew up in a small village and after school, you could often find her swimming and playing in the river near her parent’s home with her brothers and sisters.

As a child, Mariamma loved to read books by the light of kerosene lamp; Her childhood home did not have electricity. She was a smart girl and excelled at school. In 1958, at the age of 18, Mariamma left her home to attend nursing school in Madras. She practiced nursing in Madras and with the little money she earned, she helped support her family back in Kerala. At the age of 24 she started her nursing career at the All India Medical Institute in New Delhi. She married our father, Chacko Mathai in 1967.

In 1972, she moved to New York and joined the Bronx Lebanon Hospital as a nurse. Eight months later, she was joined in New York by her husband and two daughters. She worked at the Bronx Lebanon for 11 years. She advanced her nursing career at St Joseph's college in Brooklyn and earned her BSN degree. After moving her family to Westchester in 1983, she worked as a nursing supervisor at the Shalom Nursing Home and the Wartburg home. Mariamma was a dedicated nurse for over 40 years.

Mariamma was a founding member of the St Mary’s Orthodox church in the Bronx. She loved music and singing and was very active in any and all church music. She answered God’s call and served her church and community selflessly in the Martha Mariam Samajam and as a dedicated Sunday school teacher. She was a dedicated wife, and our mother. She touched the lives of countless people with her generosity, courage, and love.

Mariamma will be remembered as the loving and caring soul that she was. Her life included hardships, struggle, and overcoming the odds. She was a tiny Wonder Woman and she was a great woman. She impacted the lives of many people and as such lives on in our hearts and memories. She passed away peacefully on May 2nd surrounded by her family. She is survived by her husband, Anyankunju, her children Riny, Liny, Manu, Jerry, Gigi, & Simmy and grandchildren Kaitlyn, Loraine, Megna, Tanya, Lucas, Sana and Scrumpy.
